Having a family friend perform the ceremony and lead the rehearsal is another great way to save money and make the ceremony much more intimate. In California most counties will deputize someone for one day to perform the ceremony. This person has to be over 18 and a US citizen.

There is no reason that a family friend can’t do a professional job. I have officiated hundreds of weddings over the last 7 years and I offer a coaching program that will walk your friend through every step of creating the ceremony, leading the rehearsal and presiding over the ceremony.

I’m a professional wedding magician and have picked up some tips from performing at many weddings.

With regards point 2 – if you do have to bring together people who don’t know each other, having entertainment such as a magician is a great ice-breaker and gets people talking.

Point 6 – Sometimes things don’t go to plan and delays occur. A good wedding magician can jump in at the appropriate times to entertain guests, ensuring the event doesn’t lose its momentum.

Point 10 – Not everybody is an extrovert and some people get embarassed about getting involved in games and activities. A professional magician can provide entertainment that involves guests, but never puts them on the spot or embarasses them.

I agree with you about the photography if you are on a tight budget. Being a photographer, I would highly advise that if you are looking to get a photographer on a budget then either accept that the photos will be average or better yet, see if any of your family or friends are keen amateur photographers. They would be grateful to shoot your wedding for free and also encourage everyone to bring along their best cameras and have a go.

Be careful it does not turn into chaos because a photographer does a little more than just take photos. They know how to command and control a large group of people and what the best poses are that will suit the photos you are looking for.

I didn’t get to dance with my dad at my high school graduation so it was really important to me to honor him with a father-daughter dance during our reception. It was one of the highlights of the day. I agree dads are the best and I am who I am because of him. xoxo Dad!

As a photographer, just thought I would add a couple of thoughts for number (6). In some cases where we are starting the group shots, people start to wander off and head to the bar. Thinking they may as well wait at the bar instead of hanging around. That’s OK. I always do the full group shot of all guests right at the beginning and I ask the person who has been designated as my helper to bring two groups for their shots, if they are at the bar.

When the couple are away having their private shots, this is announced to the guests with how long it will take. They know what is occurring within the schedule and it gives them a chance to work out how many pints they can get in before the breakfast :-)

Hi, Great post and some really good points. Just on point 6. “Don’t keep your guests waiting”. I think it’s a really important point to make and there’s nothing worse than sitting around waiting for the Bride and Groom to appear, we’ve seen some terrible examples. But it’s equally important to say that there’s absolutely no harm in allowing a little extra time between the wedding breakfast and the evening reception. In our experience, guests will have been on the go for at least 8 hours by this point and it’s nice to build a spare hour into your day to allow people to catch up with friends, have a drink and freshen up before the evening reception begins. It’s a point that’s often overlooked, in our humble opinion!

My advice would be don’t go over the top with the food and spend the money on the entertainment.

The next day your guests will not care if they ate a £125 meal or Fish & Chips and to be honest will probably remember the fish and chips more! (That’s what we had at our wedding)

Great entertainment though will make them remember your day for a long time.

GREAT advice! I think its a better wedding when you don’t stress and keep it basic, than an elaborate, over-the-top wedding where everyone hates each other by the end of it. At the end of the day family/relationships are more important than the “perfect” big wedding day. My advice, keep it simple and remember whats important!

I agree, there is so much pressure around your big day sometimes it can actually ruin it through stress. Although its probably a bit cliché from my experience laid back brides seem to be the happiest. Even though sometimes they don’t get everything in their dream wedding perfect they still have a massive smile on their faces.
